Bottom line, we enjoyed our stay in Boston and the Residence Inn Downtown/Seaport - I highly recommend the city and the hotel for families! We stayed in a one bedroom with the sleeper sofa in the living room and it was really spacious and clean. The traveler pictures (including mine) make it look like the rooms are dark, but they really didn’t feel like it. OTHER INFO: There’s a laundry room and small gym on the premises. 20-25 minutes to Boston Common and the North End.15-20 minutes to Faneuil Hall and the New England Aquarium.8-10 minutes to the Institute of Contemporary Art and the South Station (the T subway and Amtrak).5 minutes to the Boston Children’s Museum, Fire Museum, Tea Party Ship Museum, the Courthouse bus stop (for the Silver Line bus to/from the airport) and most importantly, Trader Joe’s.Next door to an amazing taco place called Bar Taco. Here are walking times to places of interest with teenaged/motivated kids or kids in strollers - I can’t guarantee the times if you have sluggish preschoolers or tortoises for offspring. While those Blue Bikes seem like a good idea, riding in city traffic with kids is not fun at all. A couple of nights, we left our teenagers in the room while hubby and I sat in the lovely courtyard with our liquor store wine (the rooms are equipped with wine glasses!) LOCATION: You don’t need a car if you are staying downtown. There’s a bar in the lobby but if you don’t feel like paying hotel bar prices, you can buy a bottle of something from the liquor store across the street. Speaking of saving a few bucks on meals, the free breakfast was pretty good, except the waffles are already made (they’re not the type you make on your own with the waffle iron, which my kids like) and they don’t have plain toast. FOOD: Having a kitchen was super convenient for the nights where we saved a few bucks by eating leftovers or cheap meals from Trader Joe’s. We hunkered down for 5 days and saw most of the sights and ate a lot of the food. Bottom line- it was clean, modern, convenient, cheaper than most other places when I booked and non-sketchy.ġ.16km from Harpoon Brewery & Beer Hall Going to Boston with the kids? The Residence Inn Downtown/Seaport is a great place to stay. I did like the lounge area on the second floor I wouldn't quite call it a business area, although this is where the one computer and printer are located. I took a look at the gym and it had decent equipment in there. This last point seems minor, but it really did bother me as a design flaw. Also the sheer curtains that ran beyond the length of the window, were placed in a way that made it a pain to raise the shade. As for the window, the room had a floor to ceiling window, so the blackout shade was floor to ceiling, no middle ground. The lighting was interestingly placed, and as a short person, I had to do a bit more reaching than I would have liked to turn on the room lights located on a far wall. There was a large free-standing closet that housed the fridge, maybe some drawers, but also had a locked compartment where some sort of machinery lived (I peeked through the door crack). The only complaints I had was navigating were to put clothing, odd lighting placement, and the window shades. The room had a nice clear-door mini- fridge. It came with a decent sized bathroom with large shower, and sleek sink and all the toiletries were present. Big bonus is that it is across the street from the T. With that being said I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the hotel. It does not store any personal data.1.91km from Harpoon Brewery & Beer Hall First off, Boston is notoriously expensive for lodging, so you're going to pay a lot. Varying speeds of the foreground and background layers plus the stunning visuals take you on a tour of the movie. This website is an homage to the beloved 80s movie and uses uncomplicated parallax effects. Talk about immersive scrolling! The Goonies website is a parallax delight with storytelling embedded into every corner of it. If you are not afraid of going OTT, this is the effect for you. If you pay attention, you’ll notice that each section has design effects that are different from the rest of the website while still containing many common themes – parallax being one of them. The site is a pretty long scroll with the website divided into many sections. We have parallax scrolling, animation, grid system, and static all merged into one. Now, this is an effect that brings a great amount of digital goodness into the mix. With each scroll, you are introduced to newer shapes and graphs that perfectly encapsulate what the company does: creating actionable insights from random pockets of data using the power of artificial intelligence. The random dots on the first fold disperse and create beautiful shapes of varying graphs, with simple animation. OnCorps, an AI service provider company, stays squarely on brand with a minimalist flair to its parallax website. While the technique encourages the extraordinary display of creativity, it also creates beautifully minimalistic websites that are still a great experience to be part of. If you are thinking parallax is all about grand showcases, you are not wrong. The speed of the parallax has been kept at a slower pace to ensure that the content is given maximum attention. Second, the split page makes the information compartmentalized and easier to consume.īorn Digital is a design agency that achieves this effect with aplomb. Split-Page ParallaxĪnother effect that takes parallax to the next level is splitting the page into two. The neon background and a cacophony of fonts take care of the rest. As you scroll down, more and more information emerges and gets larger and bolder. You are forced to remain rooted at the focal point and your attention doesn’t deviate from that center of the page where all the action is taking place. The end result is bold, exciting, and spectacular.įollow the example of BeerCamp to pull off this feat. If you are in the business of creating unforgettable impressions and experiences, pair parallax scrolling with a zoom-in effect. It enhances the storytelling of the brand and also creates a more interactive and engaging experience. While Tenddo remains on the subtler side of things, OK Alpha amps up the design with striking colors as well as varying font sizes. Both these sites use bold and eclectic typography to add depth and movement to the design. Since all parallax sites are single-page sites, some people feel concerned that the technique may not be all that suitable for content-heavy sites.īusiness websites such as Tenddo and OK Alpha knock these worries out of the park. 7 Unparallel Effects Of Parallax Scrolling 1. It can be used to amplify visual hierarchy, highlight CTA buttons, and create an overall effect of smooth transitions on the website.ĭepending on the number of layers used, the speed of the movement, and the visuals themselves, the parallax scrolling effects can range from minimum to my-god-that’s-stunning.īelow, we are sharing 7 of these impressive effects that’ll convince you in the favor of all things parallax. This distortion in speed creates a 3D effect and adds depth to the visuals. This technique uses the scrolling movement to make the foreground of the page move faster than the background. However, in reality, a website that uses the parallax scrolling effect is employing a uniquely distinct technique. In web design, parallax has come to represent all websites that are single-page platforms. Parallax also has applications in astronomy as well as the field that we are discussing today: website design. The image that appears in their camera’s viewfinder and the one that comes out in the final photograph are never the same, because of parallax error. The term parallax refers to a change in the viewer’s point of view that distorts or modifies the placement of an object. Decide then.īut first, let’s get the basics right. So, if you are wondering should you ‘go parallax’ or stay put, look at these 7 stunning effects that only parallax – and no other technique – can give to your website. Parallax scrolling not only drives sales but also improves SEO and customer experience. However, before we write it off as a surface tool that is all show and no depth, here is our moment of reflection. Every map involved holding points, capturing briefcases or, (also new) pushing a Fat Man in a railroad cart into enemy territory. When it first debuted with the Orange Box in 2007, no deathmatch mode existed in Team Fortress 2. Objective-Based Conflict A prize too great for one man alone. From the start, Valve's objective with TF2 was to create a multiplayer shooter where cooperation would always lead to a team that is better than the sum of its parts. The "Team" in Team Fortress 2 is there for a very good reason. It was also commonly used for cross-promotions and pre-ordering bonuses with other video games, typically through Steam, offering new weapon designs and cosmetic items themed after the promoted title. Many new Steam features were first tested via Team Fortress 2, including achievements, cloud saving, item trading, microtransactions, a community marketplace for items, Steam Workshop functionality, free-to-play support, Steam Trading Card support, Steam Play support, and VR headset support. The Steam version of the game has seen numerous post-release updates since release, adding a large variety of new game modes, maps, weapons, cosmetic items, and gameplay mechanics. Certain gameplay mechanics are also more refined, simplifying all class loadouts while removing reliance on grenades and bunny hopping. Unlike the previous installment, Team Fortress 2 sports a cartoony CGI appearance influenced by both mid-twentieth-century Americana and 1960's spytech (after several lengthy development cycles involving realistic modern-military combat and futuristic alien invasions). The long-awaited sequel to the original Quake modification "Team Fortress" (and its standalone update, Team Fortress Classic), players join one of two teams (RED and BLU) as one of nine playable classes, each with their own unique traits and assortment of gear, as they fight over a variety of objectives including capturing briefcases, holding "control points", and pushing large warheads on rail carts. The Steam version of the game later became free-to-play on June 23, 2011. It was also released as part of The Orange Box (for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC), was later re-released as a standalone retail package for the PC (on April 8, 2008), and was later updated for compatibility with Mac (on June 10, 2010) and Linux (on November 6, 2012) on Steam. Team Fortress 2 is a multiplayer team-based first-person shooter developed and published by Valve for the PC (via Steam) on October 10, 2007. Nightmare Bonnie approaches exclusively from the Left Hall while Nightmare Chica approaches from the Right Hall, similarly to their original counterparts in the first game and the corresponding vents in the second. Now instead of copying and pasting a recipe from our web browsers into Paprika’s browser, we can simply tap the bookmarklet and the recipe is instantly saved into Paprika. When Lindsay and I were walking through the features of Paprika for this review, we discovered on the Paprika website that you can create a bookmarklet for your browser. I’ve started adding my own notes after I make a recipe too. Paprika includes a Notes section so when she sends a recipe along, she often gives me some tips like how she reduced one ingredient, or a substitution I might like. In the past, going to the web each time, she would forget what modification she’d made. Easy peasy!Īnother benefit for Lindsay in using a recipe organizer is that she can edit the recipe and never have to remember how she modifies it. For example, highlight the ingredients and push the ingredients button. If you do find a recipe that doesn’t swoosh properly, you can highlight pieces of the recipe and then push a corresponding button to pull it in manually. She finds a recipe online, copies the url and pastes it into Paprika’s browser and, with the exception of the very first recipe she tried to import, all of them have simply swooshed right into Paprika with the push of a button. Lindsay says that the built-in web browser in Paprika is her favorite part of the app. On websites they usually have the ingredients at the top so you have to keep scrolling up and down which gets old fast. Now she says she won’t even consider making a recipe on a website before bringing it into Paprika because the formatting is so pleasing, with ingredients on the left hand side and directions on the right. Before Paprika, Lindsay would go to her pinned recipes in Pinterest and read right from the web. They made it super easy by allowing me to easily import my VAST library of nearly 20 recipes form Mac Gourmet.Ī standard feature of a good recipe app these days is the ability to import recipes from the web. I finally bit the bullet and switched to Paprika. The app got bought by another company and dropped so I moved to Mac Gourmet, but they dropped support as well. Years ago I used the Yum application and would share recipes with my friend Lynn. Paprika is available for the Mac and iOS, as well as Windows, Android, the Kindle Fire and the Nook Color. One way we’ve started to share recipes is with a fantastic application called Paprika Recipe Manager from. She has inspired me over time, sending me the easier recipes in a quest to get me to break out and experiment. Like most kids, when our daughter Lindsay moved out on her own, she rebelled against her rigid upbringing and decided to try to cook two new meals every single week. It has been suggested that this is what happens when two engineers marry. Our kids first pointed it out when they noticed that we had made burritos every Monday for a very long time. In fact, it’s well known that Steve and I have been eating on a repetitive schedule for going on 20 years. I’m not a chef and I won’t even suggest that I’m an accomplished cook. In addition to their SS396 emblems, they also included simulated hood scoops and louvered hood ports. The SS models also were visually distinctive from other El Caminos. But the modified 396 at the top of the line provided 375 horsepower, the most ever available in an El Camino. There were three 396 engines available for the SS model, and the first two (which were rated at 325 and 350 horsepower) were carryovers from the previous year. When looking at specifications, the car wasn’t that much more powerful than the top performance option offered in 1967, but giving the SS label as an option to El Camino showed that Chevy did view the truck/car as somewhat of a performance machine in addition to it being a practical hauling vehicle. The hood also was noticeably longer and the rear of the cab featured a recessed window.īut perhaps the most noticeable addition to the car was the new SS396 model. Among the changes was a longer, 116-inch wheelbase, which subsequently provided a longer El Camino that measured 208-inches. Almost all of the changes echo the changes made in the Chevy Chevelle sedan and wagon, which had provided the platform for the El Camino since 1964. With that said, the changes that distinguished the third-generation El Camino weren’t all that drastic upon first glance – which still, of course, presented a car/truck hybrid that many car buyers had found both attractive and practical. So the introduction of the 1968 car may have been somewhat of a shock to those not accustomed to Chevy changing the El Camino. Sales had been impressive for almost every model year, but did slip a bit in 1967. Since the second-generation El Camino had been introduced in 1964 (following a three year break from the end of the first generation of the car), the car/truck hybrid had been changed very little, with any alterations made as part of a slow evolution process of improving the car. |
